Nyamasheke: RDF Offers Condolences and Support to Families of Five Shot by a Soldier
By The Inspirer.
The Rwanda Defense Force (RDF) has extended condolences and pledged support to the families and friends of five people who were fatally shot by an RDF soldier in Nyamasheke District.
Major General Eugene Nkubito, the RDF Commander for the Western Province, conveyed the message of comfort and solidarity on behalf of the RDF leadership during the burial ceremony held on November 14, 2024, in Rushyarara Cell, Karambi Sector, Nyamasheke District.
The incident occurred late at night on November 13, 2024, when Sergeant Minani Gervais, 39, opened fire at a local bar, killing five individuals: 17-year-old Benemugabo Denis, 20-year-old Habumugisha Onesphore, 44-year-old Sindayiheba Zephanie, 35-year-old Muhawenimana Jonas, and 51-year-old Nsekambabaye Ezira.
Following the shooting, Sergeant Minani fled the scene but was apprehended in Hanika and taken into custody. The victims’ bodies were transported to the Kibogora Hospital mortuary before being laid to rest.
The burial ceremony was attended by various officials, including Western Province Governor Dushimimana Lambert.
Major General Nkubito, speaking on behalf of the RDF leadership, reassured the bereaved families of the RDF’s continued support.
“Our leadership has sent me to comfort you and assure you that we will stand by your side. Soon, a team will visit to determine how best we can support you. While I cannot detail the assistance today, I assure you that we are here for you,” he said.

Governor Dushimimana Lambert also pledged the government’s ongoing support to the affected families, emphasizing that no child should be deprived of education or basic needs because of this tragedy.
“We will ensure no child lacks access to school or food due to losing their parent to such senseless violence,” he said.
Despite the tragedy, the families affirmed their trust in the RDF, recognizing that the soldier’s actions were not representative of the institution.
“The incident does not diminish the good relationship and cooperation we have with the national army, as we know this act was not ordered by the RDF,” the families stated.
An official statement from the RDF confirmed that Sergeant Minani has been taken into custody and will face justice in accordance with the law.
