Elderly Men in Nyagatare District Call for Deeper Campaign on Circumcision Amid Rising HIV Concerns

In the bustling Matimba Sector of Nyagatare District, Eastern Province, a chorus of voices from the older male population is sounding the alarm on the need for a more comprehensive campaign about the importance of circumcision.

These concerns stem from a perceived lack of in-depth awareness initiatives, which, according to locals, has contributed to a troubling increase in new HIV infections within the community.

The issue came to the forefront during discussions with residents, who pointed out that many older men do not fully grasp the significance of circumcision due to insufficient education and awareness efforts tailored to their demographic.

This knowledge gap has led to a concerning trend where sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, continue to spread, particularly among individuals engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse.

Pierre Mvukiyehe, a concerned community member, emphasized the health benefits associated with circumcision, stressing its role in cleansing the body and protecting against infectious diseases.

Mvukiyehe lamented the lack of targeted initiatives aimed at educating elders about the importance of this practice, highlighting a pressing need for comprehensive health education programs tailored to different age groups.

Joseline Umuhoza reiterated the issue, underlining the crucial role of parental guidance in promoting healthy behaviors among youth and adults alike. She pointed out instances where clear parental guidance led to prompt action, such as seeking medical care for circumcision.

Diogene Nzaramyimana, another citizen of Matimba reinforced the call for localized awareness campaigns, suggesting that health education should extend to villages to ensure broader community understanding and participation in preventive healthcare practices.

Responding to these concerns, Vice-mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Juliette Mureketete emphasized the district’s ongoing efforts to sensitize the population on various HIV prevention programs, including testing, condom use, and treatment options. She reiterated the importance of collaboration with the Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF) to provide accessible healthcare services, including circumcision, to those in need.

Geoffrey Mushayija, representing Strive Foundation Rwanda, acknowledged the challenges posed by increasing sex addiction among youth but noted relatively lower participation among adults in health services.

He highlighted ongoing collaborative efforts to address misconceptions and encourage greater engagement in healthcare services, particularly focusing on groups with lower participation rates.

Dr. Murerwa Mireille Joyce from Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) emphasized the health benefits of circumcision in reducing the risk of HIV transmission by up to 60%.

Dr. Joyce disclosed plans for targeted campaigns aimed at older individuals resistant to treatment, emphasizing the need for continuous education and awareness initiatives.

“We are planning to conduct a campaign targeting those who are ill, and we aim to provide them with treatment in the upcoming days.” She mentioned.

Recent data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) for 2019-2020 revealed that 56% of individuals aged 15 to 49 across Rwanda have undergone circumcision, underlining the importance of sustained efforts to promote preventive healthcare practices and reduce HIV transmission rates.

The collective voices from Nyagatare District reflect a growing call for tailored health education campaigns, highlighting the crucial role of community engagement and awareness in combating HIV/AIDS and promoting overall well-being.
