Kayonza’s Efforts in Advancing Hygiene and Health in Schools

Kayonza District is taking proactive steps in the fight against preventable diseases linked to poor hygiene, with a special focus on celebrating the achievements of the Gishanda School Group.

With an enrollment of approximately 900 students, Groupe Scolaire de Gishanda has emerged as a leading institution in promoting cleanliness and health awareness, fostering a more wholesome learning environment.

Marie Solange Mukamuganga, the headteacher of Groupe Scolaire de Gishanda, emphasized the school’s dedication to instilling a sense of responsibility for personal hygiene among its students. Students are encouraged to recognize the significance of maintaining a clean and healthy body, with the belief that proper hygiene can prevent illnesses and enhance overall well-being.

“We, as educators and partners, including ‘World Vision,’ strive to provide clean water to assist in maintaining personal hygiene. This, in turn, helps students understand the clear correlation between their well-being and the availability of clean water,” Mukamuganga stated.

Expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts of parents, she urged them to continue supporting the school’s initiatives in promoting hygiene and health. Recognizing the impact of a culture of cleanliness and health awareness on academic performance, parents were encouraged to actively participate in fostering these values among their children.

Jean Baptiste Rugira, Director of Health Programs in Kayonza District, cited the success of Gishanda School as an exemplary case in implementing hygiene and health programs. Stressing the importance of replicating such initiatives across the district, he outlined plans to implement similar programs in 270 other schools. This includes the establishment of health clubs in each school, focusing on water purification, waste management, and proper sanitation.

Rugira also underscored the need for continued collaboration and coordination among schools, local authorities, and the Ministry of Health to comprehensively promote hygiene and health. He urged schools to actively participate in the “Back to School” campaign initiated by the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC).

The district’s commitment to promoting water filtration systems, establishing health clubs, and fostering comprehensive awareness of hygiene in schools marks significant strides toward improving the overall health of students. The success of Groupe Scolaire de Gishanda sets an encouraging example for other schools, contributing to the broader objective of creating a healthier and more hygienic educational environment across Rwanda.
