DRC: At least 55 prisoners escape from Walungu Central Prison

By The Inspirer.

More than 55 prisoners escaped from Walungu Central Prison on the evening of January 12, Radio Okapi has learned from the local sources on Monday, January 15.

According to Walungu civil society, these prisoners drugged the police officer on duty, which allowed them to escape.

This escape plunges the population of Walungu into fear since prisoners are on the run. Residents are calling on the authorities to get involved in finding these escapees.

“Only old men and mothers had difficulty escaping because the escapees went through the roof of Walungu central prison. So, here in Walungu, we have great fear. Because among the escapees, there may be people who can commit atrocities, looting, and robberies. This is why the population is afraid and asks the authority to take all possible steps to identify all those who have escaped and who can be a danger for the population of our territory,” recommends Christian Ziganira, president of Walungu Civil Society.
