World AIDS Day 2022: WHO urges World leaders, citizens to address inequalities hindering the progress in ending AIDS

As the World celebrates the World AIDS Day 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) urges World leaders and citizens to address inequalities hindering the progress in ending AIDS.

Each year, on 1 December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day. People around the world unite to show support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.

Each World AIDS Day focuses on a specific theme, which this year will be Global solidarity, shared responsibility. This year’s theme joins a growing list of challenges that World AIDS Day has alerted people to globally.

This World AIDS Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) is urging world leaders and citizens to acknowledge and address inequalities that are hindering progress in ending AIDS.

Additionally, it is emphasizing the importance of ensuring equal access to HIV services, specifically for children and key populations and their partners – men who have sex with men, transgender people, people who use drugs, sex workers, and prisoners.

Rwanda:

While over 210,000 people currently live with HIV in Rwanda, the prevalence is lower in the general population and higher among FSWs at 35.5 percent. The general prevalence is 3.0 percent among the general population aged between 15-64 with 3.7 percent in women and 2.0 percent in men.

The Ministry of Health provides over 32 million condoms every year among 9 condom kiosks, public health centers, private clinics and youth corners to help Rwandans prevent against new HIV and other STIs infections.

Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever international day for global health. Every year, United Nations agencies, governments and civil society join together to campaign around specific themes related to HIV.
