Over 600 students graduate at UTB

A total of 663 students have graduated at the University of Tourism, Hospitality and Business Studies (UTB) in bachelors’ degree, diploma and certificates in different disciplines including Hospitality and Tourism Management, Business and Information Technology, etc.

The specialty of this 7th graduation that took place in Kigali yesterday May 7, 2019 for both UTB-Kigali and Rubavu is that all graduates were given International Computer Driving License (ICDL) according to Dr Callixte Kabera, UTB Vice Chancellor.

Kabera noted that the next graduation ceremony will encourage graduates to have fluency in speaking at least two foreign languages; English and French as a maximum requirement to graduate.

Graduates used to be given a task of creating jobs. Kabera said that UTB did its best to equip students with business creation skills from first to third year. “Among our targets; one is that 60 percent of our graduates should create jobs and employ others,” he said.

He said that they are preparing new masters programs to be handed to the High Education Council (HEC) for the review by the Ministry of Education and will soon introduced after having all required infrastructures in place and assessment to judge if they meet international standards.

These programs include Travel and Tourism Management, Hospitality Management, Business and Information Technology, Business Administration and are expected to solve some of the problems facing the Rwanda and the region as they will be open for Rwandans and foreigners.

Zulfat Mukarubega, the founder of UTB advised graduates to expand their dreams and use gained skills to create businesses as the campus created an enabling environment for job creation. 

Since the inception of UTB as a campus in 2008, it has offered certificates and diplomas to over 4,600 graduates who among them 85 percent are employed by other institutions while others created their own businesses.

UTB has a total of over 6,000 of whom 4,900 are having their courses in Kigali campus and 1,900 in Rubavu campus.
