Gisagara: Residents urged to report illegal brewers
RNP.
Police in Gisagara District has called upon residents in the area to expose people engaged in distilling or selling illicit brew.
The call follows series of Police operations in the district through which illegal distilleries were dismantled and seized illicit substances disposed of.
In the latest operation conducted on January 2, Police and local leaders seized over 1700 litres of locally concocted substances known as Muriture.
The substances were seized from seven distillers in the sectors of Mugombwa and Muganza.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, urged residents to give no room for the distillers maintaining that such substances are harmful to users.
Effectiveness in fighting distilling and consumption of such substances, he said, requires “actionable ownership” of the residents by reporting their neighbours or community members engaged in such criminal acts.
“The police can only do so much to control further distillation of these illicit drinks but we need your collaboration through information sharing to eliminate illegal breweries,” said CIP Karekezi.
He urged them to continue to be part of the campaign to ensure drug-free communities by reporting to police people they suspect to be involved in drug related crimes.
He noted that drinks with alcoholic content exceeding 45 per cent as well as all those without the standard mark (S-Mark) issued by Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) are classified as narcotics.
Officials also urged Gisagara residents to desist from consuming such drinks hence denying those who produce the substances from gaining markets.
