By Elias Hakizimana.

Third national communication report on Climate Change indicates that if nothing change ,Rwanda will remain net carbon sink until 2030 where Rwanda will start to be net carbon emitter.

The report shows this will be from around – 5.000 Gg of Co2 in 2012 to around 300 Gg of CO2 in 2030.

Mr Faustin Munyazikwiye, the Deputy Director General of REMA was delivering the opening remarks during the Validation workshop of Third National Communication report of Rwanda this week.

The report portrayed that if suggested mitigation scenarios are implemented Rwanda will keep increasing its capacity of carbon sequestration from -5.224 Gg of CO2 in 2012 to -6.730 Gg of CO2 in 2050.

It indicated that population growth which is projected from 10.5 million in 2012 to 23.2 million in 2050 and GDP growth from USD 756 in 2017 to USD 12.476 in 2050, the rate of urbanization of up to 30 per cent in the provinces and 100 per cent in Kigali, universal access to electricity from current 34.5 per cent are among the key assumptions which guided mitigation scenarios.

Other key factors which guide the mitigation scenarios include steady growth of manufacturing industry at an annual rate of 70 per cent, steady increase in the use of mineral fertilizers of 5 % annually, increasing and maintaining forest cover to 30 per cent of the country land area among others.
